I want to take my Yorkies with me when I go camping. We are staying at a campground in a camper. The only problem is my Yorkies are SO yappy and loud! Also wondering if we have to leave the camper to go to the store, etc. if I would be able to just leave my dogs in the camper? I know they will constantly bark while I'm gone. I don't want to disturb others but I don't know any way around this. Do any of you use shock collars :-( on your Yorkies to control barking? I really don't want to go this route but I want them to be able to go with me. How about hotels that are pet friendly. How does that work exactly? If you leave the room to go out, are you able to leave your dog in the room? Again, mine would constantly bark very loudly the whole time I was gone so that is why I never tried it. Also, I guess I would just be paranoid that my dogs may get stolen.
I think the hotels that allow dogs also have outdoor play areas and commons areas for all the dogs to play in. I'm not sure how well your dogs would get along with the others though or if they allow you to leave them unsupervised in those areas. Honestly, if its a dog friendly hotel, I'm sure everyone knows what they are getting into before checking in to the place. It's kind of common sense that you're going to hear other dogs barking regularly.
I've seen some that have private dog rooms for each dog, they have a little bed and couch for them - kind of like an oversized glammed up kennel. It would make sense, since I'm sure the hotel also wants to make money off you having dinner in their lounge/bar/restaurant as well.
I think it is great that you are taking them with you to go camping I get how it can be a bit of a hassle because you have to keep an eye on them to make sure they are not getting into anything and that they do not accidentally run off anywhere but have fun with them they should be excited, hopefully.
I have gone "camper camping" with my dogs numerous times and I am hear to tell you that if I can bring a Great Dane, a German Shepherd and a Belgian Tervuren then it will be a breeze for you to bring a few Yorkies!
As far as the bark collars go, I only recommend the shock collars for the little breeds as a last resort. An alternative collar is a citronella spray collar. When the little yappers start, the collar emits a small puff of non-toxic citronella spray that usually stops the yapping immediately. I have used them on all of my big dogs with no problems to mention.
Pet friendly hotels allow your pets to stay there but they are not usually tolerant of noisy pets. People still complain about noise and if you leave your pet in the room, the last scenario you would want is for someone to enter the room and accidentally let your babies loose. That could have a tragic ending.
The good news is that you shouldn't worry about the noise level while your yappers are in YOUR camper and in YOUR paid spot. Just lock the door when you leave. There are usually camping hosts at each site. I personally would pay them a short visit and let them know where you are and that you are leaving for a few minutes and that your little dogs are yappers and will be barking. Assure them that this is normal and you will be back soon. So if while you are gone and someone complains, there will essentially be no issues as the camp host will let them know that they have spoken with you and all is fine.
