Keeping your dog out of your garden?
I need some suggestions for keeping a dog out of a vegetable garden. My sister's elderly dog has been having stomach problems. They took her to the vet and the test results were fine. However, the problems persisted.

This week they figured it out. She is going into the vegetable garden and eating tomatoes. They don't know how many she is eating, but it's clearly bothering her.

It's crazy! She has been a really good dog up until this Summer. She always stayed out of the garden. At the beginning of Summer, she was eating all the plums on the ground. Now she is eating tomatoes.

Do you have any solutions for keeping her away from the plants?

It's weird a dog is so interested in vegetables. The first thing come to my mind that allow you to keep the dog away from the vegetables is to have the dog stay indoor. I would also check the dog's diet to see if there is a problem might be causing the dog wanting plant fiber?

Other than that, you might have to look into discipline matters. If you absolutely want the dog go out into the garden on his own, then you might want to go with him and stop him right in his track if he is going toward another tomato.

RE: Keeping your dog out of your garden?
It is strange, because this is the first year she has ever done this. The vegetable garden is somewhat elevated so she has to climb into it. She is on seizure medication which does make her a little peculiar at times. I am sure the tomatoes are too acidic for the dog to eat on a regular basis.

I will tell my sister about the using discipline to stop the behavior as it happens. We were thinking about using the sticks with streamers attached like they use to keep birds off of grass. She is somewhat skittish, so they might scare her enough to stay away. Has anyone else had success using ribbon or streamers to keep your dog out of things?
