my dog chews EVERYTHING
Hello everyone! I have a question about my dog. She is a 1 1/2 year old husky and just recently she has started chewing things. She never did this when she was a puppy. She chewed her toys and occasionally a flip flop or two. But now, all of a sudden she is stealing the kids toys, stuffed animals, shoes.. anything she can get her teeth on she is chewing. She has plenty of her own toys and we buy her more when she chews them to pieces or hides them in the backyard. Is there a reason she is all of a sudden chewing? Am I doing something wrong? What can I do to stop her?

You might want to have your vet check her mouth, maybe she has a bad tooth and sometimes dogs chew on things trying to relieve pain. Otherwise are you giving her lots of attention. My dog wanted or I should say demanded my attention and if I did not give it to him he chewed the woodwork and our shoes, the livingroom furniture and the legs on my bed.
And sometimes they chew cause they can. It can get very annoying. Often a dog gets lonely and would like a buddy to keep them company. I wish you the very best in luck in figuring out just what your dog wants and getting this bad habit curbed. Let us know how things work out. Smile

Hi Hokie, I agree with 4sweed. It could be something that's bothering her teeth. Also, it could be too much pent up energy. Does she have regular walks and exercises? If so, you might need to consider increasing the distance you guys walk daily. I know huskies are energetic dogs. They were bred to work on sleds so it might be her breed instincts kicking in. Either way, you should bring her to the vet just to be sure.

Now, if it's a bad habit, there are ways to discourage chewing. One of it is rubbing citrus scents on the items that you don't want her to chew. Also, it's best to keep an eye on her so that you could correct the behavior immediately.

By the way, I know it may not be something that affects the chewing behavior, but is she intact or spayed? Because if she is intact, it could be her way of escape due to the raging female hormones.
