How does your dog get along with other pets in your home?

I have a 20 pound bishon/poodle mix. His name is Jacoby. He is a very well-mannered dog, as he is now 13 years old. I also have a bird, and since the day I brought the bird home, Jacoby has been terrified of it! You'd think he'd want to attack it or eat it, but he just runs away every time he sees the bird.

I also have a friend who has a giant goldendoodle. Their family also has a cat. This dog is the most hyper, destructive, but lovable dog. The cat is very quiet and independent as cats tend to be. The goldendoodle always wants to play with the cat! You feel bad for him, because the cat just hisses and runs away, and all he wanted to do was play.

So, how do your dogs react to other animals? Do you have small animals like ferrets or guinea pigs? Bigger animals like rabbits? Or huge animals like horses?

My friend had a huge great dane, and they later also got a pet bird. The dog would freak out if you went over to see the bird. I couldn't tell if it was being protective of the bird or just really jealous of it, but the dog wanted your sole attention - and would start pulling on your pant leg until you got away from the bird cage.

We have two cats now, but when someone is my family is baby sitting someone else's dog, they will bring them by the house to visit. The cats freak out and stay hidden. It's almost comical. The dogs will want to play with them and the cats will be up on the book shelf acting like "oh hell no..."

My Yorkie, Peanut, is VERY set in his ways! He is so grouchy and grumpy! He does not like to be messed with. He is like an ornery old man!

My other Yorkie, Prissy, is just the opposite! She is hyper and bouncy and happy! She wants to play ALL the time. She pounces on him and he CONSTANTLY growls, snaps and barks at her. She is totally oblivious! She is so happy go lucky she still has that big long tongue flapping out of her mouth and her little nub tail is wagging 90 to nothing. He can be SO mean to her and she doesn't even get it! She even gets right in his face a smiles at him. She will tap his head with her paw like she is saying, "Come on Peanut! Get up and play with me!" He looks at her with the MEANEST look ever. If looks could kill...

I love watching them interact together! They are so cute and entertaining!

Our roommate has a cat who is about 12 or 13 years old. When we got Brogan she was not too happy about it. She hid out for a few days and then slowly started coming back out of the bedroom. Now she comes out a lot and Brogan tries to play with her but she just slaps at him and hisses at him. (She is declawed, which I feel is NOT the thing to do for a cat but she was like that when my cousin got her). Brogan will put his little butt up in the air and bark at her just wanting to play but she won't have it. Sometimes she does get playful and will chase him up the hallway slapping at his butt. It's hilarious! But she just really tolerates him. I wish they would lay together and cuddle but I do not ever see that happening.

This is a very good question and I have an easy answer for you. The answer is: Bad, very bad. Duc, my yorkshire terrier is an adorable dog, though, he's only adorable to humans and female dogs. No matter what other animal you present him with, he'll try to kill it or at least bite it. I have a guinea pig in my room and I have to keep my door closed all the time. Whenever I leave it open or allow the dog in, he'll sit next to the pig's cage, looking at him. As soon as the pig comes out of his hidding place, the dog attacks the cage at full force and I have to take him outside of the room, else, he'd end up destroying it and doing whatever(I don't know what and I'm not really curious.) with the pig. This happens with other dogs in the street aswell. When I'm walking him, if I find another dog, no matter how tall it is, he'll try to attack it.

I once had a cat and a dog (the dog was there first and then I got the cat later). They did not quite get along and I believe they were just not used to each other the dog was used to being the only pet the cat was also used to being the only one in her household but you can make them get along but I would say introduce them when they are younger.
